Sweet Baked Apples

This dessert just shouts Fall to me. Cozying up infront of a fire place and munching on baked apples. They're easy to make and suprisingly delicious.


Ingredients:
4 Baking Apples (I recommend Gala because they maintain their shape)
1/2 cup chopped walnuts
1/3 cup brown sugar
3 tbsp unsalted butter

Directions:
Heat the oven to 400F. Wash the apples, remove the cores and place in a shallow baking dish.
Next in a small bowl combine the nuts, sugar, and butter. (Chop the butter into small pieces. Spoon the nut mixture into the apples and pile some on top aswell. Bake in the oven for 20-25 minutes.

Eat warm from the oven with a scoop of vanilla ice cream on the side. Mmmm delicious!

This weeks Etsy Seller Feature is on Etsy shop "Able Mabel" run by Jen and Leann, two crafty sisters from Western Colorado. Abel Mabel sell all kinds of household items such as aprons, coasters, light switch covers and baby items which as they like to put it "find the fun in functional".

" As artists, we are inspiried by everyday things around us...family, nature, colors, emotions, moods, etc. Give us a fun piece of fabric, paper or beads and it's off to the races! We love finding the "unusual" and making it into something functional!"

You're very creative it seems like you do a litle bit of everything! Have you always been crafty?

I haven't always been crafty. In fact for many years I avoided anything crafty. I thought I could never do it, I didn't have the patience, etc.

What is your favorite craft?

I alternate between sewing and paper crafts as my favorites.

How did you first learn your crafts?

Trial and error. I experimented with various methods until I found just the right way to do it.

Do you have a favorite item in your Etsy Shop right now?

Technically, no. But I do something with it most days, even if it's just computer work. I don't necessarially create new product everyday.

The flexibility of it. The ability to use it as an "excuse" to create.

What makes you unique at Etsy?

I try to "find the fun in function".

Do what you love, love what you do. Push yourself to try new mediums, techniques. You never know what you might discover.

Do you have any small business tips to share?

Stay organized, even if you detest that part of the business.

Do you have any tips to share for anyone who is thinking about setting up an Etsy shop?

Keep at it. Don't give up even if the sales aren't rolling in. Take the best photographs you possibly can and then take better ones. Promote off Etsy if possible. Only invest as much money into your business as you can afford to lose.

Eggplant Pasta Salad

I love pasta and pasta salad is such a great staple. Here is a pasta salad with a twist that you can serve at your next picnic or bbq

Ingredients:

3 tbsp extra virgin olive oil
2 celery stalks, finely chopped
1 medium sized eggplant, cut into half inch pieces
1 pint of grape or cherry tomatoes, cut in half
1/4 cup tomato paste
1/4 cup white wine vinegar
1/4 water
2 1/2 tsp Kosher salt
Pepper and red pepper flakes
1 tsp sugar
2 tbsp capers
1/4 pine nuts

1 lb penne (I used whole wheat to make it healthier)

Directions:
Heat 2 tbsp of olive oil in a large saucepan over a medium high heat, Add the celery and cook 3 or so minutes until slightly softened. Add the eggplant and tomatoes.
Meanwhile combine the tomato paste, vinegar, 1/4 of water, 2 1/2 tsp of salt, 1/4 tsp of pepper and the sugar. Stir into the eggplant.

Reduce heat to medium low and cover. Cook until eggplant is tender (around 15-20 minutes).
Remove from heat and stir in the capers and pine nuts.

Meanwhile cook the penne. Toss with 1 tbsp of olive oil and let cool.
Combine the pasta and eggplant before serving.

Pat was born and raised in New Jersey but currently lives in Diamond Bar, California, thirty miles east of Los Angeles. Pat sells her original art prints, ACEO's,original paintings, bibs, totes for children, shirts, and book plates in her Etsy shop. I guess the only crafting tip I have is to learn as much as you can about your craft through

Having a small internet business takes a lot of work. There is so much competition that you have to spend a lot of your creative energy finding ways to be seen. I personally list and renew several times a day since it's so easy to get buried on Etsy. I spend some time in the forums but mostly I find places to advertise which requires a lot of searching. I also have other online shops and a Facebook Fan Page.

Do you have any tips to share for anyone who is thinking about setting up an Etsy shop?
If you plan on setting up an Etsy Shop be prepared to promote constantly and getting known takes time..

This weeks Etsy seller feature is on Maricela Flores at Cards Between Friends . Maricela lives in Fayetteville NC and is a stay at home mom raising her 3 kids who are 16, 14 & 5 - she used to be in the military!

Ok, so have you always loved stationary?
Stationary wasn't my first love. I remember picking up a plastic canvas kit my sister left on her bed and I started following the pattern in the booklet. Ever since then I've fallen in love with any craft possible. Sewing, cross-stitch, tatting & card making with rubber stamps. For some reason I have no talent for scrap booking, but wish I knew how to crochet. But I do still have the magnet which was made out of the plastic canvas.

What made you first decide to start making cards and selling them?
I first started making cards around 2001 when a friend invited me to go to a class her friend, who was a demonstrator at the time, was giving. It has always been just a hobby & creative outlet until recently in October 2008 when I set up shop in Etsy. I did this after encouragement of family members. I don ' t regret any second since joining. It ' s hard work & time consuming, but very rewarding doing this for myself.

Blast Off Any Occasion Card

I see you do a lot of collage type cards - what are your favorite cards to make?
My favorite are water coloring and also dimensional items, not necessarily just cards. Such as party favors for my kids birthday parties and classes.
The reason why I enjoy water coloring is because it ' s very relaxing and easy to get lost in my own little world...very therapeutic! When all the coloring is done, that ' s when the glitter is added with a glitter pen for sparkle. It just finishes off the whole piece.
I love that you send cards directly to the recipient that ' s a great service - do you write the message too?
I can and have written the buyer ' s message on the card before sealing it up. With everything else going on in our lives, it ' s nice to have someone else take care of that for you.
All the buyer has to do is leave me a message at the time of purchase. I ' m in constant contact with the buyer and sometimes I worry that I ask too many questions. But it ' s important for me to get the message and the card right.

Do you have a favorite item in your Etsy shop?
For now, my favorite item in my Etsy shop is my Water Color Gnome. It ' s always been one of my favorite stamp sets, but shamelessly underused.
The image begs to be water colored, that ' s when the sweet gnomes start coming to life. And also the colors on the card along with the decorator paper makes for a lovely combo.

Do you do your craft full-time?
Making my custom orders, samples, updating my shop, sending out orders, taking, editing & posting photos and showing my shop to does require quite a bit of time. Many hours a day are spent doing this as many who do the same thing realize. A lot more than Iâ€™ve ever imagined! So i do consider it to be full time. I love it!

Where do you find inspiration for your paper products?
Inspiration comes from ALL OVER! Everywhere I go, everything see, just like many other artists. I love experimenting with different color combinations, techniques & layouts.
And if I mess up or it just doesn ' t look good, no one has to know!
90% of my inspiration comes from other card makers who graciously share their work on various websites. It ' s amazing what they 'r e capable of creating.

What do you love about your business?
I love coming in contact with many different people on Etsy. I can feel their excitement when I show them a card I came up for them for their special occasion. Custom orders keep me out of a rut and forces me to try new things. They tell me about the person, what they like, and a few more questions later, I come up with a card that I hope they like and approve. Most of my sales are through the Etsy website since that ' s where I advertise my shop the most.

What makes you unique at Etsy?
My cads are 4 " x 3 3/4 " rather than the average 4.25" x 5.5". I started making them this size about 2 years ago. For some reason, they were easier for me to work with. The smaller space helps cozy it up a little. That ' s when my design style started to emerge.

Do you have any crafting tips to share for anyone who likes to make their own cards?
The right type of inks and papers make a HUGE difference on how your cards turn out. Quality really does count! I started out with the cheap-o, flimsy papers, but moved on up to top quality items. The envelope also makes a tremendous difference. My cards come with a beautiful standard size Kraft envelope.

Do you have any small business tips to share?
Be proud of your work and don ' t underestimate yourself. You ' ve got to be constantly promoting yourself, or else you ' ll drown in the sea of sellers. Go through the forums for valuable information and many other resources Etsy has to offer. Lots of information out there from fellow Etsy sellers. Learn from their mistakes and share yours also!

Do you have any tips to share for anyone who is thinking about setting up an Etsy shop?
There ' s no such thing as a dumb question. Ask or post it and more than likely someone has an answer for you. I ' ve learned so much from others and gladly share my info that might help someone else sell. A good experience was getting my shop critiqued during one of the virtual labs. Just by watching others shops get critiqued is also helpful

Is there any other information you would like to share with my readers?
Buyers can definitely tell when your heart is put into your products. This is true for me since I'm a buyer, also. I think for a lot of us sellers, we work so hard at tying to sell our product, not just for the money...which definitely helps, but also for being acknowledged.
Sometimes it's just as gratifying to hear someone tell you how impressive your work is.

DIY Tee-cycling

Lately I've been trying to get very creative with my clothes. Fall is here and I'm dying for a new wardrobe but money is tight so I'm recycling and re-inventing my old clothes. Having cleared out my closet the other week I found a few items that I wouldn't wear again due to holes and what not but that I still basically liked so I cut them up and stuck them on other clothes to see how they looked. Why not?

This tshirt was my first attempt. I took and old tank top that had a cool design on the front and carefully cut it off and attached it to a plain grey tee to give it a fancy bib necklace kind of style. I just used fabric glue as I have yet to aquaint myself with a sewing machine (fingers crossed I'm getting one for Xmas). It assures me on the bottle that I am able to wash this without it falling off - we shall see!

Peanut Butter Popcorn Best Movie Snack Ever?

Sometimes I love nothing more than curling up on the sofa and watching a movie or a really good HBO show! And of course I have to have a little something to snack on. I love popcorn but it can get a little boring so I figured why not take popcorn and slather it in one of my favorite foods (peanut butter). The results were delicious - I ate pretty much this whole bowl by myself I am ashamed to say and it only took 5 minutes to make...couldn't be simpler!

(makes a large bowl about 8 cups)

Ingredients:
1/4 cup popcorn kernels
Kosher salt (to taste)
1/2 cup honey
1/4 cup sugar
1/2 cup of your favorite peanut butter (I recommend Skippy All Natural Extra Chunky - extra chunks = added crunch!)
1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract

Directions:
Coat the bottom of a large pan with a thin layer of vegetable oil and heat over medium heat. Add the popcorn kernels and place the lid on the pan leaving a small crack for the steam. When the popcorn starts popping move the pan back and forth rapidly to ensure evenly popped popcorn. When the popping slows down take the pan of the heat.

Pour the popcorn into a bowl and salt to taste.
IMPORTANT: Make sure you remove any unpopped kernels!

Next combine the honey and sugar in a small saucepan and bring to the boil. Simmer for a minute then remove from the heat and stir in the peanut butter. Once the peanut butter has melted mix in the vanilla then pour the peanut butter mixture over the popcorn and stir until all the popcorn is evenly coated.

Once the popcorn has cooled carry to the couch and dive in!

I love that I can take it in any direction that I want. All I have to do is imagine something, and if I work hard enough, I can take my business in that direction. Do a lot of research before you start! There is SO much information in the forums. Start reading and start making lists. Ask questions. Etsy is a strong community of people going through the same thing that you are. Know that it will take a lot of your time, and you probably won' t make much money. But also remember how much you love to do your craft and how cool it is to see your work in your own online store and in other people ' s homes.

Pomegranate Lime Iced Tea

I'm fairly confident to say that I drink more ice tea than pretty much anyone, as I drink it all day every day (no exaggeration). I generally play around with our iced tea maker to come up with different flavors but I saw this recipe on realsimple.com the other day and had to try it.
It's super simple and delicious and not only do you get all the benefits of tea but all the goodness of pomegranates as well. I switched out the sugar for agave syrup to make it healthier - you can find agave syrup at your local health store.

Pomegranate Lime Iced Tea - Adapted from Real Simple

Ingredients
8 cups boiling water
8 tea bags (I used lipton but you could experiment with other teas)
2 cups pomegranate juice
3 limes, thinly sliced
1/4 agave syrup (or 1/2 cup sugar)

Directions
Pour 8 cups of boiling water into a pitcher (heat resistant). Add the tea bags and let steep for 10 minutes.
Remove the tea bags.
When the tea is cool add the pom juice, limes and agave syrup (or sugar)

Serve in a nice tall glass with lots of ice!

How did you get started in making handbags?
I started sewing a few years ago, mostly felt plushies, small monsters and a lobster, who is called Hummer (the German word for lobster), he still lives on my desk and watches me sewing. As I am addicted to handbags, it was only natural I tried to sew bags and pouches. I searched the internet for simple instructions, self taught me how to sew bags and later made my own pattern. Most bags were gifts for friends and members of my family, but people kept telling me I could also sell them - that's when I started pinkracoon.

Where do you find inspiration for your products?

I read tons of blogs everyday, which are very inspiring. They are not only about sewing but also about graphic design, illustrations, photography or home decor. When I have an idea for a bag, I usually start making sketches and then choose fabrics I want to use, but I also often find some nice fabrics first and then think of what I could make with them. Beautiful fabrics are a great inspiration!

I love selling at etsy because it is so personal. When I sew a pouch or a bag and someone likes it and hearts or even buys my item, it always makes my day. It's great to communicate with the buyer and making someone happy with somthing I created.

Somehow, my favorites are always the latest items I designed. At the moment, I like the dachshund pencil cases, especially the grey one. I love the grey fabric, which I also used for a lot of my other pouches. It is so soft I'd like to stroke it all day. Perhaps I should make another lobster with the grey fabric!

I think my bags are unique because they are fun, colorful and cute. You might call them childish, but that's just what I am. I would never make a bag that I don't like, just because some people would buy it. My shop is small but personal and I think it's very important that each buyer is happy with their purchase.

Do you have any tips for crafters starting out?


Take good pictures! That's the best tip I can give you. There are so many great crafters on etsy who sell wonderful items but have blurry or dark pictures which don't make the item look as good as in reality.

Something fun I saw on Craftzine - so fun right? Makes me wish I had a garden to try it in!


Try this alternative to spray paint, and leave your mark in the way of gardeners past.

MATERIALS

Several clumps of garden moss
1 can of beer, or pot of natural yogurt, or 12oz buttermilk See which works best for your location.
½tsp sugar
Blender
Plastic container with a lid
Paintbrush and spray mister



DIRECTIONS
Step 1: Gather moss.
First gather together several clumps of moss. You can find moss growing between the cracks in paving stones, near leaky drains, on trees ... basically, moss loves damp and shady places. Mosses do not have roots but use rhizoids to attach themselves to surfaces, meaning that you can easily collect moss by hand or with a spatula.




Clean off as much of the mud as possible by soaking it in water.

Step 2: Make the moss milkshake.
Put the moss in a blender and add beer (or yogurt or buttermilk) and sugar. Blend just long enough to create a smooth, creamy consistency, like a thick milkshake. Pour the mixture into a plastic container.

Step 3: Create your design.
Find a suitable location onto which you can apply your moss milkshake (a good indicator is somewhere that moss is already growing). Paint on your chosen design (either freehand or using a stencil).



Step 4: Tend your graffiti.
If possible, try to water your masterpiece daily with a spray mister. Soon the bits of blended moss should begin to recuperate, maintaining your design before eventually colonizing the whole area.

Homemade Strawberry Ice Cream

This is one of my favorite ice creams I have made to date. There are many different ways to make ice cream but I find this the simplest and the tastiest!

Ingredients:
8 large egg yolks
1 1/4 cups sugar
1/4 teaspoon kosher salt
2 cups skim milk
4 cups sliced strawberries
2 cups heavy cream


Directions:
In a sauce pan (off the heat) whisk together the egg yolks, sugar and salt until blended. Gradually whisk in the milk and heavy cream.

Cook over a medium heat stirring frequently for about 20 mins until a custardy consistency is reached.

Pour the custard through a sieve into a bowl. Leave to cool and then refridgerate until cold.

When cold pour the custard mixture into an ice cream maker and churn for approx 30 mins (or to manufacturer's instructions.

Meanwhile slice up the strawberries into bite size pieces combine with 1/4 cup of sugar and mash together. If the strawberries are very ripe they may become too juicy and you can strain the excess juice through a sieve. Add the strawberries to the ice cream in the ice cream maker and churn another 5 minutes.
The ice cream will have a soft serve consistency. I like my ice cream a bit firmer so I transfer the ice cream to a tupperware and stick it in the freezer for a couple hours before serving.

I was so excited when I was contacted by the owner of "My Jewelry Place", a jewelry shop in Chesapeake City, Maryland. They wanted to sell some of my bracelets in the shop and would I be interested? You bet I was interested! So I ordered new supplies and made up a special sample order of 24 bracelets. This was my first wholesale order so it was pretty exciting! I just mailed the package off today and am thrilled at the fact that the owner found me on Etsy and at the prospect of being sold in a real live store as well as my Etsy shop.

If anyone is in the Chesapeake City area stop by and check out the shop. It looks lovely from the website. I'm tempted to drive down and visit myself but it would be kind of a looong drive!

Today's Etsy Seller Feature is on Kristi Wyckoff of Kitchen Stitchen. Kristi is based in Grayslake, IL and has a line of "kitchen linens and accessories for the discriminating and fashion conscious cook".

Kristi created Kitchen Stichen after she noticed that there was a derth of kitchen items that were both fasionable and functional (her creations are right up my alley!). There aren't too many stores that specialize soleley in kitchen linens and Kristi's pocket potholders are pretty unique!

Kristi describes herself as having always been around needle and thread, patterns and pins. A stay-at-home mom of a 5 yr old girl and an 4 yr old boy she also teaches dance classes while the kids are at pre-school and tries to fit her sewing in whenever she can.

Where do you find your inspiration?
I find inspiration everywhere, but mostly in the fabric designs. It is fun to sit down and look through fabrics and combinations when it is time to buy. But really the designs come from anywhere. I saw a pillow style I liked and have it down in my mental notebook to try out a similar design at a placemat soon.

What do yo love about your Etsy business?
I love that I get to sew, that I get to create items for other people to use and love and that I can put my own personality into everything I make.

Kristi's Tips for Etsy Sellers:

I would say to start with a real plan. I have another shop which was my first. I didn't do research into what I was making and as it turns out, the market was saturated for bags! I also didn't realize that I'd get bored and frustrated making bags. They are a lot of work with little return. Also, find a niche. Whether a type of item or a type of style that is unique to you, you should distinguish yourself from others on Etsy.

English Summer Pudding

On my recent trip to England my sister and I spent a couple days in Yorkshire visiting family friends who have an amazing vegetable garden. We picked our own veggies for lunch and dinner and one night we decided to make a summer pudding because of the abundance of berries in their garden. We used white currants, red currents, black currants and raspberries. The more raspberries and redcurrants you use, the brighter the color will be. I would avoid using strawberries, as they lose their color and don't really have a strong enough flavor.

Summer Pudding is quick, easy and delicious and will forever make me nostalgic for English summers. The trick is to use slightly stale bread which will hold together better and to leave the whole thing in the fridge overnight, however because ours was an impromptu summer pudding we used day old bread and only refrigerated for a few hours - hence the falling apart look. I can assure you it tasted delicious though!

The following quantities are rather an estimate on my part as we didn't use a recipe but I doubt you would have any problems trying to recreate it

2lb mixed fresh berries, eg raspberries, redcurrants, blackberries
1/4 water
1 1/2 cups granulated sugar
8 or so slices good quality thin sliced white bread, stale
Cream for serving

First combine the white currants, red currents, black currants with the water and sugar in a small saucepan and leave on a gentle heat, stirring occasionally, until the berries start to soften and the sugar is dissolved. Remove from the heat and add more sugar if too sour and add the raspberries.






Next Remove the crusts from the bread and cut a piece to fit the bottom of a pudding basin or bowl. Use the remaining slices to line the sides of the bowl reserving a couple slices to use for a lid.

Pour the berries into the bowl with the juices as well, and top with the final layer of bread, cutting to fit. Press down on the pudding until the juices rise to the top, covering the bread. Place a saucer, small plate on top of the pudding (try and find one that fits more or less exactly the width of the bowl), put a weight or something heavy on top, and refrigerate overnight.

When you are ready to serve place a serving plate on top of the pudding and turn both over together until the pudding falls out.

Serve with some fresh cream

Headbands!!

I made these headbands over 6 months ago but I never got around to taking photos (I have to find a time when my boyfriend and I are both home and its sunny and I can convince him to take pics of me)

They are gold and silver grosgrain ribbon which I stitched onto a stretchy hair elastic to make them easy to get on and off. I think I will be wearing them a lot this fall and winter as they are a fun hair accessory. I will also be making some for my Etsy shop so look out for them this week

Okay off to watch Mad Men now : )

Fresh Lemon Lime Sorbet

Sorbet is one of my favorite desserts especially this time of year when all I want is to feel cool. I recently acquired and ice cream maker and have been busy experimenting with ice creams, frozen yogurts and sorbets but so far this is my favorite.


Ingredients:
3 cups granulated sugar
3 cups water
2/14 cups of freshly squeezed lemon and lime juice ( I recommend getting a juicer it took me forever to squeeze all those lemons and limes by hand)
1 1/2 tablespoons lemon and lime zest

Directions:
First I made a simple syrup.Combine the sugar and water in a large saucepan and bring to a boil over a medium high heat. Reduce heat to low and simmer until the sugar dissolves (3-5 minutes). Cool completely (you cant have anything hot going into the ice cream maker).

When cool and the lemon/lime juice and lemon/lime zest and stir. Pour the mixture into the freezer bowl and turn on the ice cream maker and let mix for about 30 minutes. To get a firmer consistency I then transfered the sorbet into an air tight container and placed in the freezer for a couple hours or until I want to eat it : )

To serve I topped with some frozen berries

Here are some tips anyone with ANY camera can begin using today to improve the quality of their shots for online sales.

1. Turn Off the Flash
Start by turning off your flash. 9 times out of 10 glare (caused by the flash) on your product is going to make the image look amateur and as a result lower the buyer's confidence in the quality of the product as a whole. Wait until daytime, turn out any lights in the room, and pull a table up close to a window or doorway. Photograph your product there in the soft difused light. Diffused light isn't only flattering light for skin tones and face shapes, it's just as powerful a photographic tool on your pretty product.

2. Remove Distracting Elements
I can't even believe that I'm forced to point this out. Sheesh people. :) Remove anything from the photograph that doesn't add directly to the feel/concept of the image as a whole. Obviously this includes any kind of mess or clutter that is in no way related to the product, but also, this applies to elements you're tempted to add to the image just for the sake of creativity. I know it's our tendency to attempt to grab the buyer's attention by utelizing our creativity to create a "catchy" image. Remember: 99.9% of the time what we think is going to be "catchy" ends up being a turn off to buyers as it simply looks cluttered and distracting. Not to say that there's no good in staging. . .

3. Utilize Simple Staging.
Simply placing your product on a piece of glare free fabric (or paper) can be sufficient. A a simple complimentary pattern may add a little punch without feeling too busy. Having a model wear the product (if applicable) rather than just photographing it lying lifeless on a table can add dynamic. The trick is to attempt to be creative without getting out of control. Your product should be the focus of the image.

The rule of thumb should be, if your staging is distracting from your product, or if your eye isn't immediately drawn to your product, but first drifts to another part of the image, then you need to back off of the staging. Be sure to get an outsider's opinion. Sometimes we get so caught up in the concept we're going for as photographers that our judgment can become clouded.

4. Employ Creative Use of Depth of Field to Highlight Product Detail
Use a low aperture to create a shallow depth of field to highlight the elements that make your product special. Since people can't physically handle your product, you've got to make sure you show them everything there is to show. . . including the details. If you're not familiar with controling depth of field check out this article from the DPS archives or simply switch your camera over to Aperture Priority and make sure your aperture (fstop) is dialed down to the lowest possible number your lens allows.

Today's Etsy Seller feature is on Dana Laymon @ Dana Laymon Photography. Dana hails from Wilmington, NC and is lucky enough to live at the beach! Dana has a desk job but shoots weddings on the weekends. She also does family portraits and maternity shoots (belly pics).

How did you get started in photography and what camera/s do you use?
My mom was always into photography and so I just gravitated towards it. I wanted a camera as soon as my parents would let me have one. It took me a while to get into digital because I'm such a film fan. At the moment I use a Canon Rebel XSI, a Holga, and a lomo color flash camera.

Where do you find inspiration?
I live at the beach so of course where I live provides great inspiration. But I find it everywhere, friends, weddings, my family, trips, all over.

What do you love about your business?
With weddings, I love that I get to share in that experience with people. It's such an important day and I get to capture it for people! It's so special.

What is your favorite print right now?
I really don't have one! I just did a bridal session with my friend Beth and her pics came out beautiful. She's such a quiet girl and I love that she came out of her shell for these pictures.

What makes you unique at Etsy?
My prints are so different than what I've seen on etsy. It's not just of nature or a certain subject. They come from all over the world and the collection covers about 10 years of my life. I use a lot of effort to make sure my prints are the best they could be.

Do you have any tips for amateur photogs?
I would say learn as much as you can from book stores and the internet and practice as much as you can. With photography the only way to really learn is by doing (and making mistakes!)

Galician Style Fluke and Skate Wings

I am always scouring the web for new ways to cook fish. We fished the other day and caught some fluke and skate so I decided to try a skate wings recipe. Skate are possibly one of the ugliest fish around but they do taste good!

Those are not my hands by the way!

Look at the skate with its weird smiley face!

I adapted this recipe from Emeril Lagasse's "Galician Style Fish"

Ingredients:
6 tablespoons olive oil
1 cup diced onion
1 teaspoon minced garlic
1 cup tomato concasse
3 teaspoons capers
3 teaspoons lemon juice
6 tablespoons butter
1 tablespoon chopped parsley plus more to garnish
1 1/2 teaspoons salt
1/2 teaspoon white pepper
1 teaspoon paprika
1 cup of Wondra (instant flour)
2 skate wings
2 fluke fillets

Directions:
In a sautee pan heat 3 tablespoons of olive oil over a medium heat and cook the onions. Garlic, tomato concasse and capers for 5 minutes. Add the lemon juice then swirl in the butter little by little. Add the parsely and a pinch of white pepper. Set aside and keep warm on a very low heat until the fish is ready.

Combine the flour, paprika, 1 teaspoon of salt and 1/2 teaspoon of white pepper in a baking dish and dredge the skate and fluke fillets in the mixture. In a large sautee pan over a medium high heat heat 3 tablespoons of olive oil and when hot add the fish. Cook approximately 4 minutes on the first side and 2 minutes on the second side depending on the thickness.

Serve the skate and fluke hot, topped with the sauce and a sprig of parsely.

Perfect Pouch Tutorial

I found a tutorial for this cute as a button pouch on modernquiltlove.

Ms Quiltlove explains the steps so well that even a novice sewer like me could attempt it. I think I am going to give it a try! I would use it as a make up bag because you can never have too many of those ladies!

To make your own you will need the below:
2 pieces of exterior fabric measuring 8 inches by 6 inches. (The longer side will be the top of your pouch, keep this in mind when cutting directional fabric)
2 pieces of interior fabric measuring 8 inches by 6 inches
2 pieces of mid-weight woven non-fusible interfacing 
1 12 inch zipper
Coordinating thread (this will be visible on the outside of the bag)

Tools:
rotary cutter
cutting mat
shears
craft scissors
clear ruler

Comic Relief XKCD

I recently came across xkcd "a webcomic of romance, sarcasm, math, and language".
It was started by Randall Munroe who used to work at NASA and is very funny in a "Far Side" kind of way. A lot of the comics would work well as cards, these two would make cute Valentines/Romantic cards.

Sublime Stitching

Having seen lots of cool embroidery around lately I've been dying to try my hand at it but had no idea where to begin. Luckily for me I found Sublime Stitching which describes itself as "this ain't your grandma's embroidery". That intrigued me and I was excited to see they have beginner embroidery kits so I purchased one. I can't wait to start stitching my brain is already whirring with ideas. As soon as I've finished my first item I'll share it with you..unless it's really bad and then I probably won't!

I feel like embroidery is coming back into fashion now...Does anyone else do embroidery?

Releasing Henry

A few months ago my boyfriend found a turtle (eastern painter) in his parents driveway. It was a tiny thing (the size of a quarter) and we couldn't figure out how it got all the way over there as it was so far from any water. We took it home and bought it a tank and made a nice set up for it but for the first week we had him he wouldn't eat and didn't even move around much. After some nursing back to health he developed a voracious appetite and doubled in size and became so lively. I used to put him on the floor and watch him run around like crazy trying not to lose him behind the sofa! I named him Henry for some reason : )

After a few months I figured that we should probably release him back "into the wild" so he could have a normal turtle life so we took him to a nice quiet pond where lots of turtles hang out and set him free! He was a bit unsure at first but soon scampered into the water. I like to think that he now has a turtle family but I do really miss him!
